Neighborhood

The Castro Pretorio district develops around Piazza della Repubblica, west of Termini station, and includes the Baths of Diocletian. The majestic vaults of the Baths of Diocletian today host part of the National Roman Museum and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Begun in 299 AD, the construction carried out under Diocletian and Maximian lasted eight years. The neighborhood is renowned for the magnificence of its villas, including Villa Peretti Montalto, which once occupied part of the Viminal, Quirinal, and Esquiline hills. The Caserma Castro Pretorio, located in the district, has a history that began with the Castra Praetoria in 23 AD and continued through the centuries, becoming the headquarters of the elite troops tasked with protecting the city’s commanders. After September 8, 1943, the barracks were involved in the disarmament of the Carabinieri in the capital and also became the headquarters of the German authorities. Today, the barracks are logistically important for the entire Italian Army and house various physical and logistical facilities. In summary, Castro Pretorio is a district rich in history, art, and architecture, with deep ties to ancient Rome and a vibrant contemporary life.
